What Authors and titles do you cover over the 2 years in English Lit?
Posted by GuestK654, 16/10/2020 at 17:57
Hi there,
Our exam texts are at present the following: The Great Gatsby + The Age of Innocence / The Sound and the Fury, Hamlet, The Duchess of Malfi & Tennyson's Maud.
Coursework texts change each year depending on teachers' preferences but recently we have taught T S Eliot's poetry, A Room with a View, Emilia by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, Days Without End by Sebastian Barry and Pinter's The Homecoming.
I hope that some of them appeal!

Every year we have several students who go on to study English at top universities including Oxbridge but because of the diverse range of subjects that English can be studied alongside our students go on to study all sorts of degree subjects from Humanities and Social Sciences to Medicine and Modern Foreign Languages which then opens up all sorts of career paths.

What extra-curricular clubs are available in the sixth form? Is there a school newspaper and any connections with local and national media?
Posted by Guest201, 16/10/2020 at 19:28
Hi there,
We have a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities including spelling club for year 7, a creative writing society and a literary and cultural discussion group where we've had guests such as John Hodge (BAFTA award winning screenplay writer) and a Dreamworks executive come to talk to our students and from our connection with this producer we've also had students gain work experience in the film industry. We also run writing competitions every year (one for poetry, one for short stories and one for journalism). Well known writers are invited to guest-judge the competitions (most recently Imogen Russell Williams) and the winning entries are published in our Anthology which is launched in a local bookshop and sold in Bath as well as from school. We are really lucky to have Catherine Bruton, a well known author, on our staff and she, alongside all of our department, champions creative writing. Every year we have students who win / are commended in national competitions - most recently (made public just yesterday!) one of our students was announced as one of the 15 winners of The Foyle Young Poets of the Year award out of 16,000 worldwide entries. Our school newspaper is also edited by one of our 6th form English students and gives students who want to work in journalism later on vital experience of writing and publishing.
